After a lengthy consultation period between Genesis Energy and Ngāti Tūwharetoa, in 2000 the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board (on behalf of hapū of Ngāti Tūwharetoa) and Genesis Energy signed an agreement to mitigate the ongoing impacts of the Tongariro Power Development Scheme (TPDS) on Ngāti Tūwharetoa.
An outcome of this agreement is the establishment of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa Genesis Energy Committee (NTGEC). The primary purpose of the committee is to distribute the mitigation funds on behalf of Ngāti Tūwharetoa. The Committee provides support for cultural, educational, health, and environmental initiatives.

For Rangatahi Program initiatives, applicants must provide:
- Completed form
- A detailed project plan and budget.
- Applicant must be registered with the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board (TMTB).
- A list of rangatahi attending the program.
- Project location (description, physical address, and detailed map).
- Land ownership and/or hapu support.
- A verified bank deposit slip or statement.
Note: New Rangatahi Program Applications for the 2025-2026 funding year will only be considered twice per year. This will be done at the September 2025 and March 2026 hui.
