Over recent years the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board on behalf of Ngāti Tūwharetoa has negotiated a number of initiatives to support Ngāti Tūwharetoa endeavours.
In October 2002 the Ngāti Tūwharetoa Mighty River Power Development group was established as a result of a partnership agreement between Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Mighty River Power. In 2016 Mighty River Power became Mercury Energy and the group is now referred to as the Ngāti Tūwharetoa Mercury Development Group (NTMDG). The Development Group provides support for cultural, educational, and sporting initiatives.

For WĀNANGA ASSISTANCE initiatives applicants must provide:
- You must provide a detailed plan outlining the step-by-step process which will be undertaken.
- You must provide a detailed budget outlining costs for the wānanga
- Letter of support from Marae confirming your booking.
- Project location (if applicable)
- Verified Bank Account Details (e.g. bank statement, screenshot of bank details from mobile app, verified deposit slip)
Notes:
Funding over and above the maximum amount may be given to those wānanga which are hapū or iwi based (up to $8,000.00. 4 wānanga at $2,000.00 each)
Wānanga must be held at a Tūwharetoa Marae.
