Our people. Our whenua. Our wai. Our future.

Our people. Our whenua. Our wai. Our future

Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board exists for the people of Tūwharetoa. Established in 1926, for 100 years, our mahi has been grounded in a simple responsibility: to serve our people and work for the strength, wellbeing and future of our iwi.

Our whakapapa

The Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board was established in 1926 pursuant to the Māori Land Amendment Act 1924 and Māori Land Claims Adjustment Act 1926. We are part of a whakapapa that reaches back through generations and forward to those yet to come.

Our work is shaped by the relationships that connect us, to our whānau, our hapū, our marae, our whenua, our wai and to one another.

Our responsibility as kaitiaki

At the heart of this is our responsibility as kaitiaki.

We have an enduring responsibility to Taupō-nui-a-Tia and the Waikato Awa, taonga that are inseparable from the identity, whakapapa and wellbeing of Tūwharetoa.

We work to uphold, protect and advocate for these taonga, ensuring their mauri, health and future are considered for generations to come.

Supporting the aspirations of our people

But our responsibility extends beyond the taiao. It is about hāpai i ngā wawata me ngā tūmanako o Ngāti Tūwharetoa, supporting the aspirations of our people across all aspects of iwi life.

Culturally

by strengthening our identity, whakapapa, tikanga, reo and connection to the places and traditions that make us Tūwharetoa.

Socially

by supporting the wellbeing, resilience and aspirations of our whānau, hapū and marae.

Economically

by creating and supporting opportunities that strengthen our people, build our collective prosperity, and contribute to a sustainable future.

Environmentally

by upholding our responsibilities as kaitiaki and advocating for the protection and sustainable management of our whenua, wai and taonga.

Our responsibility to future generations

We carry the aspirations of our people. We carry the responsibilities of our tūpuna. And we carry responsibility to those who come after us.
