He Kupu Whakataki - Introduction
This fund is here to help Ngāti Tūwharetoa uri take part in sports and recreation activities that strengthen hauora, whanaungatanga, and Tūwharetoatanga. It supports both individuals and teams who are representing Ngāti Tūwharetoa or Aotearoa at recognised competitions.
In 2000, following kōrero between Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Genesis Energy, an agreement was signed to recognise and offset the impacts of the Tongariro Power Development Scheme (TPDS). The Ngāti Tūwharetoa Genesis Energy Committee (NTGEC) was formed to manage and distribute this funding on behalf of our iwi.
Key Objective
Your application must show how it supports:
- The health and wellbeing of Ngāti Tūwharetoa iwi.
This includes kaupapa that:
- Encourage active lifestyles and hauora,
- Provide opportunities for uri to compete and develop their skills, and
- Strengthen identity and whanaungatanga through Tūwharetoatanga.
How Much Can You Apply For?
Applicants may be considered for a grant of up to:
- $250 per applicant - representing at a national competition
- $500 per applicant - representing New Zealand at an international competition in NZ
- $1,000 per applicant - representing New Zealand at an international competition overseas.
⚠️ You can only apply for two sporting grants in each financial year.
Ngā Paearu - Criteria
✔ Who can apply & what you must provide
- Be of Ngāti Tūwharetoa descent and registered Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board (TMTB).
- Provide proof of costs (invoices or receipts from a recognised sporting body).
- Provide written confirmation of selection into the team from a recognised sporting body (must be officially selected, not self-nominated).

Your application must fit into one of these categories:
- International Sporting Grant - representing New Zealand at an international competition (in NZ or overseas). Confirmation from the NZ national sporting body is required.
- National Sporting Grant - representing New Zealand at a national-level competition. Confirmation from the NZ national sporting body is required.
- Tūwharetoa Team Sporting Grant - teams must show how they are upholding Tūwharetoatanga (currently supports teams at National Iwi competitions such as Ki-o-Rahi, Touch, Basketball, Rugby League).
✔ How applications are considered
- Preference is given to applications with wide benefit and outcomes shared at hapū/iwi level (whānau-level proposals may also be considered).
- Applications will be assessed on their merit and within the available budget.
- Final funding decisions are made by the Committee.
Reporting & Accountability
If successful, you must:
- Provide a report, receipts, and photos within 8 weeks of the event (shortened from 12 months).
- Share your outcomes with your marae/hapū and provide high-resolution photos for the NTGEC Annual Report.
- Be available to present back to the Committee if asked.
⚠️Non-reporting will make you ineligible for future funding.
This fund is not for:
- Incomplete applications or missing information.
- Applications that should be funded elsewhere.
- Apparel/Uniforms or general sports gear.
- Events already completed before applying.
- Self-nominated or school team selections.
